FAQ's Related to US Naturalization
What is naturalization?
Naturalization is the process by which foreign nationals are granted US citizenship after meeting the requirements established by the US Congress in the Immigration Act.
What is the first step to obtaining US citizenship?
Establishing permanent residence is the first step toward acquiring U.S. citizenship through marriage. This is achieved by obtaining a green card issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
I want to become a naturalized citizen, but I am not in the United States. What options do I have?
If you are not yet in the United States, one option for legally entering the country is for your spouse to file Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative. Once you have this permit, you can begin the process of applying for a green card.
When and how can I obtain US citizenship through marriage?
The general answer is that you must be a permanent resident, i.e., a green card holder, for at least three years and have been living in a marital union with your US citizen spouse during that time.
If that time has passed, then you can file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, along with the required documentation and the corresponding USCIS fee.
