President Obama has recently announced some actions that the Department of Homeland Security will take to prioritize deportations in this country. The president announced two programs (1) Expanded Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals which will expand the residency period of qualifying dreamers to January 1, 2014. In addition, dreamers will not be restricted by age at the time of the filing of their application. (2) Deferred action for parents of US Citizens and Legal permanent residents who have resided in the US since January 1, 2014 and are not otherwise a priority for removal. This new plan will allow approximately 5 million undocumented individuals to obtain work authorization and be protected from deportation. The new DACA will be available in a period of 90 days and the Deferred Action for Parents will be available in 180 days.
